L-carnitine derivatives as therapeutical agents for treating myopathies and neuronal degeneration and for inhibiting proteolysis. The use is disclosed of compounds of general formula (I) wherein: Y is hydrogen or methyl and R is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group selected from methyl, ethyl and isopropyl, and the pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, for treating myopathies, neuronal degeneration and some pathologies affecting the liver, skeletal muscles and myocardium. The compounds can be administered orally or parenterally.
