The invention relates to a mechanical device making it possible visually, by virtue of the position of an indicator, to check the struck or not struck state of fire extinguishers on which it is installed and to release gas therefrom as required, without making them operate or dismantling them, simply by manual action on a valve. This device comprises a cylinder (1) including a locking device made up of a ball (5), a return spring (6) and an adjusting screw (7) for keeping, in an up or down position, a piston (2) which slides inside comprising, for this purpose, two grooves and which is actuated by the action of the gas or by the finger and serves as a gas release valve by virtue of a longitudinal flue. Sealing of the system is ensured by a seal placed on the piston base (3). The position of the head (crown) of the piston (4) indicates the state of the extinguisher and serves for the possible release of gas therefrom. The device according to the invention is particularly intended to optimise safety in fire extinguishers. <IMAGE>
