The invention concerns optically active 1,3-dioxolanes for use as dope additives in liquid-crystal mixtures, the dioxolanes having the general formula (I), in which n >/= 2, R<1>, R<2> and R<3> may be an alkyl or alkenyl group, Q and B an aromatic ring system and Y a spacer group. Such compounds have a sufficient tendency to form mesomorphic phases, produce a high degree of twisting and produce little spontaneous polarization. They are capable of inducing cholesteric or optically active smectic phases, in particular Sc* phases. The compounds have the particular advantage that they are suitable for use in modifying ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixtures.
