A composition for addition to a mercerizing liquid comprises a compound of the formula RO(CH2CH2O)nSO3H, or salt thereof, which has at least 7 carbon atoms and in which R is aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatically bound aralkyl and contains 3 to 10 carbon atoms, and n is a whole number not greater than 5, and at least one branched chain aliphatic monohydric alcohol containing 8 or 9 carbon atoms. The composition may also include a sparingly soluble alcohol having at least 5 carbon atoms of which amyl, hexyl, n-octyl, iso-octyl, isoamyl alcohols and 2-ethyl-butanol are specified and, to promote solution, ethylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, triethylene glycol or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and also a mercerizing auxiliary such as phenol. Sulphuric acid half-esters specified are those of ethylene glycol mono-n-hexyl ether, diethylene glycol mono-n-propyl ether, triethylene glycol-n-propyl ether, ethylene glycol mono-isoamyl ether, diethylene glycol mono-isoamyl ether, diethylene glycol mono-n-hexyl ether, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and the sodium salts thereof. The branched chain alcohol may be 2-ethyl-hexanol, iso-octyl alcohol, di-isobutyl carbinol or 3 : 5 : 5-trimethyl hexanol-(1). In the examples the mercerizing liquor comprises sodium hydroxide at 30 DEG B</>e and crude, unboiled cotton yarn is treated. |
