In the prodn. of a gas-generating charge based on azide for an airbag, 20-60 (wt.%) nitrate and opt. perchlorate and 40-80% azide, all with particle size less than 80 microns, are dry mixed; the mixt. is made into a paste by adding a binder which is readily volatile on drying; the mixt. is granulated; dried and opt. sifted to remove a very fine fraction; and 80-98% of this mixt. are mixed with 2-20% of an ignition mixt., which burns faster. If a mixt. is used, this consists of 10-40% perchlorate and 60-90% nitrate. Pref. KNO3,NaNO3 or NH4NO3 or a mixt. of these is used. The ignition mixt. consists of 28% amorphous B, 67% KNO3 (finer than 80 microns) and 5% binder; or 35-65% perchlorate, 65-35% Zr, Ti, Al and/or Mg and 2-10% binder. USE/ADVANTAGE - The charge can be made cheaply and used in thin foil or pressed form. On ignition, it inflates the airbag within ca. 20 ms. The combustion gas is not toxic.
