A drive unit for automatic washing machines incorporates an asynchronous motor with a stator phase with bifilar coil parts. The phase/speed is regulated by means of pulse width modulation via an intermediate direct current circuit. The unit features a second, directly fed stator phase, which is displaced in relation to the first phase and is equipped with an alternating current coil for a low revolution speed range (washing operation). The phase is switched off for a subsequent high-speed range (spinning operation). ADVANTAGE - The units cuts expenditure on regulating technology while permitting as high a spinning speed as possible.
