ORGANIC POLLUTANT MONITOR

An ultra-violet absorbence-based monitor for on-line monitoring of organic pollution in water at on-site locations measures the reduction in UV light 17 passed through a sample and also makes measurements 14 A-C to provide indications of the amounts of visible light absorbed by, and scattered by, the samples. Conductivity pH and temperature measuring probes, 11, 12 and 13A and 13B respectively may also be provided. The amount of organic matter contained in the sample is determined from the measured reduction in UV light by a calculation in which the results of the other measurements are used for compensation purposes. Sampling apparatus for withdrawing such a sample from a liquid source comprising a buoyant sampling head with an inlet port submerged beneath the water surface is also disclosed.
