PURPOSE:To remarkably increase the rate of hydrolytic reaction and obtain the objective compounds at a high conversion rate in high yield by the presence of specific aminopyridines in hydrolyzing 2-halophenols in the presence of a copper compound catalyst and producing the catechols. CONSTITUTION:2-Halophenols are hydrolyzed in the presence of a copper compound catalyst in an alkaline aqueous solution to produce catechols such as 3-isobutenylcatechol useful as an intermediate for carbofuran (an insecticidal parent chemical). In the process, 2-aminopyridine, preferably 2-amino-4- methylpyridine or 2-amino-5-methylpyridine having a lower alkyl group at the 4 and/or 5-positions in a molar amount of 0.00001-10 times, preferably 0.0001-1 based on the copper is present in the aforementioned reaction system to industrially and advantageously afford the objective compound. |
