In an outboard propulsion unit, for securing to a boat's transom, a reversible internal combustion engine 4 drives a propeller 8 via a drive shaft within the casing 5 and 7. The casings 5 and 7 are hinged at 3 so that the unit may tilt or a lock is provided to prevent tilting when the propeller is in reverse drive. The lock comprises a latch 9, pivoted at 14, having a hooked end adapted to drop over a pin 11 by the action of an armature (connected to the rod 27) of a solenoid 16 which is energised when an electric starter, within the casing 18, is set to start the engine 4 in reverse. The pin 11 may be adjusted to alternative positions and the latch 9 may be replaced by a lock of the sliding bolt type. |
