An electroplating apparatus comprises a cylindrical barrel 5 rotatable about its axis which is horizontal and having an opening 6 at one side, a pivotal flap 7 on the barrel 5 adapted to close the opening 6, a driving member, e.g. a spur pinion 9, rotatable about the barrel axis and permitted limited angular movement relative to the barrel 5, and means carried by the flap 7, e.g. a bracket 15, engaging a part rotatable with the pinion 9, whereby rotation of the pinion 9 in one direction causes the flap 7 to close the opening 6, and rotation of the pinion 9 in the opposite direction causes the flap 7 to open the opening 6. The bracket 15 has a roller 14 which engages a slot in an abutment, or between two abutments 11, on the pinion 9 which is driven through gearing 10 by an electric motor, the pinion 9, on being rotated, completing a predetermined angular movement before engagement of one or other of the abutments 11 with one of the shoulders of a gap 12 in a flange 13 on the barrel 5, thus transmitting rotation to the barrel 5. The barrel is submerged in a vat and has vanes 16 (Fig. 1, not shown). A cam 18 on the barrel actuates a switch 17 which opens a holding circuit of a relay for the electric motor after actuation of a manual switch to stop the barrel in a position with the opening 6 uppermost.
