The invention relates to a pallet loading device generally similar to that described in Specification 781,736 but differing mainly in that the loading carriage has beneath it a sensing means which contacts the pallet or a previously deposited tier of articles thereon and operates switch means to indicate unloading of the carriage. As in the above Specification, the apparatus comprises a framework 100 having vertically moveable within it an elevator 104, and a carriage 154 movable transversely to and suspended from the elevator. When the carriage is loaded at position A, it is traversed to a position B above the pallet and the elevator is lowered until a sensing plate 270 contacts the pallet or previously loaded articles at position C as shown. The plate 270 extends across substantially the whole of the underside of the carriage and may operate any of four switches 274. When the plate is moved by contact with an object, solenoids 284 raise it clear of the object, a stripper arm 200 swings down to retain the articles supported by the carriage, and a stop 238 to the rear of the carriage is lowered. The carriage then moves transversely to position D, the articles being stripped from it. The elevator returns it to A for reloading. The apparatus is fully automatic, an electrical control system, Fig. 10 (not shown), being described.
