DENSIFYING CONTAMINATED PLASTICS

Contaminated plastics waste is compacted by passage through a heating zone to produce a melt and causing the molten contaminated plastics to flow continuously out of the heating zone under the influence of gravity. The apparatus comprises heaters (50) in the side walls and heater (56) in a spider (46) in the centre of the exit zone. The molten plastics is directed into moulds (60) for disposal in solid brick form. An extractor fan (24, not shown) is present to remove fumes. The apparatus may be modified to treat and sterilise medical plastics waste (Figs 15 or 22, not shown). The apparatus may be modified to treat used plastics cups as part of a vending machine (Figs 24 or 28 not shown). The apparatus may be modified to treat credit cards (Fig 30 not shown).
