A layer-type transition metal dichalcogenide in the form of single molecular thickness platelets. The platelets are connected together so edges of each platelet adjoin basal planes of adjacent platelets. There are voids between the platelets. The composition is produced by exfoliating the transition metal dichalcogenide with an alkaline metal in an aqueous solution, lowering the pH of the suspension until aflocculant is formed, and then separating the flocculant from the liquid.
