PURPOSE:To obtain a still picture without blur by reading picture elements arranged in 2-dimension in which horizontal picture elements are deviated for each column by two adjacent lines in the case of a still picture in zigzag, storing the read signal into a storage means as a 1st field, and reading the signal of the 1st field as a 2nd field signal so as to form a picture. CONSTITUTION:A counter 5 outputs a low level signal to a memory controller 3 and an image pickup mode flag generator 7 in the moving picture mode. Thus, the controller 3 outputs an image pickup signal subjected to digital conversion to a signal processing circuit 6. In this case, signals of 1st and 2nd columns are read in zigzag and the result is used for a video signal in the moving picture mode by the circuit 6 and recorded on a recording medium 10 via a D/A converter 8 and a video recording circuit 9. In the case of a still picture, the controller 3 stores tentatively the signal of the 1st field to a memory 4 with a high level signal and inputs the signal to the recording medium. Then the signal in the memory 4 is read to form a video image with high picture quality.
