A process is disclosed for preparing aromatic-substituted unsaturated amides. The process comprises treating a compound of the formula <IMAGE> II where Ar is C6 to C10 aryl unsubstituted or substituted with at least one halo, amino, nitro, hydroxy, C1 to C12 linear or branched alkyl, C1 to C12 linear or branched alkoxy or haloalkyl, the alkyl moiety being C1 to C6 linear or branched or the group <IMAGE> where Ar' is C6 to C10 aryl unsubstituted or substituted with at least one halo, amino, nitro, hydroxy, C1 to C12 linear or branched alkyl, C1 to C12 alkoxy or haloalkyl, the alkyl moiety being C1 to C6 linear or branched; and R and R' are the same or different and are hydrogen or C1 to C12 linear or branched alkyl and can also be phenyl unsubstituted or substituted with at least one halo, amino, nitro, hydroxy, C1 to C12 linear or branched alkyl, C1 to C12 linear or branched alkoxy or haloalkyl, the alkyl moiety being C1 to C6 linear or branched, with an inorganic dehydrating agent.
