The electromagnetic switch, able to control a heavy electric current in starter motors or the like comprises a rod (12) actuated in the longitudinal direction by an electromagnet, a fixed contact element and a movable contact element (14) supported by the rod in such a way as to come into selective engagement with the fixed contact element by excitation and de-excitation of the electromagnet. The moving contact element (14) is allowed to turn about an axial line perpendicular with the axial line of the rod in such a way that the moving contact can establish a correct and regular contact when the fixed contact element has dimensional errors, and the moving contact can easily be detached from the fixed contact element even when the two contact elements are stuck by fusion to one another. The rotational movement of the moving contact element can be achieved by elastically retaining the moving contact element on the rod between a pair of convex surfaces. In a variant, the combination of a plane retaining surface and of a conical disc spring interposed between the plane retaining surface and the moving contact element may be used in place of the convex surfaces.
