In order to produce a face-profile equaliser of the continuously variable type, it is proposed to place two wedges head-to-tail on the propagation path of the X-rays of the irradiation apparatus. By bringing these wedges closer together or further apart from one another, continuously variable attenuation is caused, depending on the separation distance of the wedges. This mechanism can be motorised with ease. It is shown that it is particularly useful when used in medical densitometry or tomodensitometry, as well as in radiotherapy. <IMAGE>
