PURPOSE: To develop composite structures which prevent displacement and damages of fibers during compression and coalescence, keep the fibers spaced apart, and bring optimum distribution of the fibers. CONSTITUTION: A metal or ceramic foil (aluminum, titanium, aluminides or the like) has a groove 12 wherein a fiber reinforcement 16 (carbon, boron, silicon carbide or the like) is deposited. Also included is an off-gassing groove 18. The groove is typically formed with chemical etching. A holder 24 is provided to temporarily hold the fiber within the groove like a fugitive binder such as acrylic resin. The composite structure is manufactured by superimposing a plurality of layers of a preform 1 and compressing/coalescing at high density under heating and pressurizing. The preferred application is to form an archimedean spiral on the disk-shaped foil.
|
