<p>A farrowing pen has vertical side wall members (13 and 14) and a rear wall member (15) inclined to the vertical. The lower edge (18) of the wall member (15) is spaced from the floor (17) by a distance sufficient for a piglet to move under the edge (18) to a protected area (19) to escape crushing when a sow lies down on the floor by leaning against the inclined wall member (15) and sliding to the floor. A heated area (12) for the piglets contains a first heating means (34) of relatively high intensity, mounted in an upstanding wall component (33), and a second heating means (35) of relatively low intensity output mounted in a base component (32). The high intensity heating means (34) attracts piglets into the heating area (12), where they can lie comfortably on the floor to be heated by the second heating means (35). <IMAGE></p> |
