Diesel engine fuel injection - has timing altered by weights thrown outward with increasing rotational speed

The compression-ignition IC engine has a device which varies the timing of the fuel injection as the engine speed varies. The device is incorporated in the sprocket which drives the fuel injection pump and consists of two cylindrical weights (3). Each weight is pressed radially outwards by centrifugal force and presses against one fixed guide surface (4) and one movable guide surface (6). The guide surface (6) is formed on a part (7) of the driving sprocket and as the weight (3) moves radially outwards the driving sprocket is rotated relative to the injection pump shaft to alter the instant when fuel is injected. The initial position of each weight (3) is adjusted by means of a hydraulically actuated piston (11) with an oblique side surface. The travel of piston (11) is limited by a stop (14).
