In a hydraulic pressure generator with a main pump driven by a diesel engine, a main user circuit connected thereto is formed by a setting choke (18) directly connected to the main pump and a user (11) connected in series thereto. By comparing the output pressure PH coupled in a first control chamber of a control valve (31) with the comparison pressure PV which can be detected at the main user (11) and coupled in a second control chamber (37) of the control valve (31), the control valve (31) controls an adjuster (21, 22) in such a way that the flow volume in the main user circuit (16, 11) remains constant. A protective device designed to prevent the diesel engine (13) from stalling under extreme load comprises an auxiliary pump (42) driven with the engine which generates a rotation-speed-proportional output flow volume which passes through a further adjusting choke (46) and a synchronous-revolution user (44) downstream thereof and a pressure-controlled valve (47) via which the second control chamber (37) of the control valve (31) relieves pressure towards the tank (32) and thus sets the main pump (12) to the minimum volume conveyed if the motor speed falls below a threshold.
