EM retarder acting as eddy-current brake - uses permanent magnet rotor and claw-shaped stator with cooling passages

The retarder has a disc rotor (2) attached to a sliding shaft (1). The periphery of the rotor is provided with permanent magnet pole pieces (3). The stator (4), in which eddy currents are induced by the proximity of the rotor, is made of mild steel. It has two legs (4.1,4.2) between which the rotor pole pieces will fit when the rotor and stator are slid together. A passageway in the stator (6) allows the flow of a cooling medium. USE/ADVANTAGE - Road or rail vehicles. No external power supply needed; powerful braking without overheating and within limited space and wt. requirements.
