The drive comprises electric motors (4) with drives, each motor and drive forming a module (2). The rotor (14) of the electric motor is overhung on the bearing-mounting input shaft (4) of the drive. Pref. the electric motor is of the outer rotor type. In an angular space between the electric motor housing periphery and the output axial side of the drive above is connected a vehicle wheel drive shaft (32) to the drive output shaft (26). The wheel drive shaft is of articulated type, using a pivotal joint (34). Typically the electric motor has electronic commutation and/or permanent magnets (16) on the rotor and/or of sync. type and/or with an external rotor. Two electric motors may be used each with its own drive, with the two units forming the module.
