PURPOSE:To provide a method for processing an optical fiber base material to correct the curvature of the optical fiber base material before drawning or coating. CONSTITUTION:A method for processing an optical fiber, characterized by employing a lathe 11 having a fixed chuck 14 and a transferable chuck 15 having mutually coincident chuck centers, respectively, wherein the holding force of the transferable chuck 15 is set in a stepwisely changeable state, holding one end of a target optical fiber base material 16 with the fixed chuck 14, holding the other end of the optical fiber base material 16 by the first small holding force with the transferable chuck 15, heating a region between the fixed end of the optical fiber base material 16 and the other end to a desired softening point temperature, increasing the holding force of the transferable chuck 15 to the second holding force, and subsequently returning the other end of the base material 16 to the chuck center to correct the curvature. |
