This fire-extinguishing bell (1) has a frame (10) made of pipes over which a covering material (11) is stretched. Variants are claimed for a number of features of the bell, including: the framework pipes being heat-resistant and connected together to enable a flow of coolant through them; the covering material being of asbestos-coated or other material; the interior of the bell being substantially gas-tight against the outside surroundings, and being inerted, with e.g. nitrogen, through a connection at the top; the bell having arrangements for anchoring and for diverting the flow of burning liquid or gaseous matter and lowering its speed and pressure. USE/ADVANTAGE - The bell is for use on fires difficult to extinguish, in such places as oil wells, oil storage depots, pipelines, etc., and offers extinguishing at resonable cost and without endangering the fire-fighters. It is light in weight and can be placed in position by crane, helicopter, or other means.
