The flat seal is a laminated structure with a support plate in the core and soft material plates of fibre fleece material connected one one or both sides thereof. The areas (9') of the soft plates which are wetted by the coolant and are unpressed in the installed state have the profiled sections (17) which can be on one or both sides and arranged in a grid pattern. The profiled area can be formed by a perforation wherein the depth of the profiled areas is at least equal to a third of the sealing plate thickness (1'). The coolant which is gradually forced through the sealing surface into the soft material cross-section can escape rapidly outwards through evaporation. USE/ADVANTAGE - The construction of the flat seal or cylinder head gasket for an IC engine prevents the soft material from bulging or splitting from the metal plate.
