PURPOSE:To provide a novel benzylidene cinnamic acid derivative exhibiting a blood sugar-lowering action and useful as a diabetes-treating agent. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (A is condensed bicyclic amino which may have one or two unsaturated double bonds in the ring; R is H, 1-8C alkyl, 7-10C aralkyl) or a salt thereof, e.g. (E)-2-benzylidene-3-(cia-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-2- isoindolinylcarbonyl) propionic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting benzylidene cinnamic anhydride of formula II with a compound of formula: A-H and, if necessary, esterifying the reactional product. The compound of formula I has E and X isomers based on the double bond, but the E isomer has a suitable pharmacological action on both of an insulin secretion- accelerating action and a blood sugar-lowering action. |
