PURPOSE:To obtain a compound in a short time in high yield in hydrogenating an alpha-(alkylphenyloxy)-beta-alkanol in the presence of a catalytic system using both Pd catalyst and a catalyst selected from Ru, Rh, Pt and Ni catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-(alkylphenyloxy)-beta-alkanol shown by formula I [at least one of R<1> to R<5> is group shown by formula II (R<9> and R<10> are 1-4C alkyl or R<9> and R<10> are bonded to form cycloalkyl where R<11> is H or R<11> is H or 1-4C alkyl) and the others are H or methyl; R<6> to R<8> are H or 1-16C alkyl) is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst (preferably supported on active carbon, alumina, silica, silica magnesia or zeolite) using both a palladium catalyst and one or metallic catalysts selected from ruthenium, rhodium, platinum and nickel catalysts as a catalyst to give an alpha-(alkylcyclohexyloxy)-beta-alkanol [e.g. 1-(2- tertiary-butylcyclohexyloxy)-2-butanol, etc.] shown by formula III. This compound is useful as perfume or a raw material thereof. |
