Microbes (I) are cultured as follows: 1 or more (I) are added to a silicate-based material (II) pretreated with a nutrient source, and the mixt. is kept under conditions such that (I) will propagate. (II) is cation-free porous and hydrophilic Si02 particles; and the growth medium contg. (II) and nutrients is solid. Prefd. (I) are fungi or bacterial, which are absorbed onto (II). (II) is pref. a silica frame (particle size 1-2000 esp. 10-900 micron; specific surface area 10-1000 m2/g) prepd. by treating a phlogopite, biotite, vermiculite, bentonite, or kaolinite with an acid, opt. in the presence of an oxidising or reducing additive, to leach out the contained cations; and is pref. in gel form. |
