<p>Compositions comprising as active ingredient a compound of the formula (ArO.)nX-(O.CO.R)m wherein Ar is an optionally substituted phenyl radical, e.g. a chlorophenyl such as pentachlorophenyl radical, R is an acylic or cyclic organic radical containing more than six carbon atoms and derived from a non-volatile organic acid, X is a polyvalent fungicidal metal, e.g. manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc or mercury and m and n are positive integers the sum of which equals the valency of the fungicidal metal X, are prepared by reacting an oxide, a hydrate or a volatile organic acid salt, e.g. of acetic or formic acid of the fungicidal metal with a solution in a heavy organic solvent of the organic fungicide in a substantially equimolecular quantity of a non-volatile organic acid preferably at a temperature below 100 DEG C. In an example colophony (or naphthenic acid or tall oil) pentachlorophenol and heavy aromatic solvents or methyl naphthalenes, polyisopropylbenzenes or the like are refluxed and copper or zine oxalate added.ALSO:A biocidal composition for the protection of organic materials against insects, fungi, bacteria and the like comprises as active ingredient a compound of the formula (ArO.)nX-(O.CO.R)m wherein Ar is an optionally substituted phenyl radical e.g. a chlorophenyl such as pentachlorophenyl radical, R is an acyclic or cyclic organic radical containing more than six carbon atoms and derived from a non-volatile organic acid, X is a polyvalent fungicidal metal e.g. manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel copper, zinc or mercury, and m and n are positive integers the sum of which equals the valency of the fungicidal metal X. The composition may be prepared by reacting an oxide, a hydrate or a volatile organic acid salt e.g. of acetic or formic acid of the fungicidal metal with a solution in a heavy organic solvent of the organic fungicide in a substantially equimolecular quantity of a non-volatile organic acid preferably at a temperature below 100 DEG C.</p> |
