A rod with adjustable length comprises a first, larger dia. tube into which a second, smaller dia. tube is inserted and can move telescopically. The smaller dia. tube has a conical spreader on which an expandable member is located and which locks the first and second tubes together. A spring component consisting of a cylindrical plastic bar, typically of polyurethane with a Shore hardness of 85, is located between the conical spreader and the second tube and acts as a damper. The spring is contained in a plastic housing, the inner bore of which guides an axial extension of the conical spreader without rotation during axial movement. A connector at a distance from the cone connects the housing to the second, smaller tube. USE/ADVANTAGE - The rod is used as a variable length ski pole, has a relatively short, lightweight axial extension on the conical spreader and a lightweight plastic spring avoiding corrosion problems.
