The radio telephone, linked to a central station for communication between the different subscribers, has two radio receivers (SPE, NE), one of which acts as a standby receiver (NE) and is only switched into operation when a continuous signal provided by the central station is not correctly received by the first receiver (SPE), which has a lower reception power. Pref. the continuous signal exhibits a repetitive signal sequence which is evaluated upon reception to verify the correct reception and initiate switching to the standby receiver. The battery is switched out during switching over from one receiver (SPE) to the other. ADVANTAGE - Reduced battery drainage by use of high power receiver only when required.
