PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber of which the optical transmission loss due to an external pressure little increases even after it is stored under high- humidity conditions by forming its core from an organosilicon (co)polymer of a specified composition. CONSTITUTION:An organosilicon (co)polymer having recurring units of formula I or II wherein X<1>, X<2>, X<3> and X<4> are each a hydrocarbyl, alkoxy or aryloxy; at least one of them is alkoxy or aryloxy; and P and Q are bivalent aromatic hydrocarbon groups (e.g. formula II or III) is prepared. An optical fiber is produced by using a core material containing the organosilicon (co)polymer as its core component. Examples of the clad components of the optical fiber include polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, a tetrafluoroethylene/ ethylene copolymer and a polyamide resin. |
