Material preforms cut from an extruded section drop freely between two rotating discs, each with a conically faced working surface. Each disc is driven at a different speed and/or in a different rotational direction. The conical disc faces oppose each other, are adjustable both relative to each other and also in respect of their concentricity and inclination of the axes of rotation. At least one of the disc faces has curved grooves running to the outer edges. Pref. the appts. has two driven discs (3,3') with conical working surfaces (4,4'), the angle of inclination of the faces being approx. 85 deg. to the disc (3,3') axis. Discs (3,3') are connected by drive shafts to motors (5,6). At least one of the discs has curved slots running from the centre to the disc periphery. A hopper (22) above the discs (3,3') feeds preforms (2) of a kneadable material into the machine. Preforms (2) are cut from a continuous extrusion produced above the machine. Preforms (2) are rolled into spheres (1) between the discs (3,3'). The discs (3,3') can be driven in opposite directions and at different speeds using knobs (24,24'). Vertical adjustment screws (13) enable the horizontal axis of the disc (3) to be moved in a vertical plane relative to the axis of the other disc (3'). The motor (5) is mounted on a vertical slide mounted on the sidewalls (9). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process and appts. mfr. approx. spherical bodies, e.g., ear plugs from kneadable material, are automatic and eliminate a difficult hand process.
