The present invention relates to a machine serving for the unrolling of a roll of articles in widths, particularly fabric, paper or carpet (materials with a pile). It comprises a device for receiving a roll comprising a gear motor so as to be able to drive the said roll in rotation, a first return roll (31), a second movable return roll (37), a third return roll (58), a sensor for sensing the position of the said second return roll (37) with respect to the said first and third return rolls (31, 58) and a control unit which receives the signal delivered by the sensor and which controls the gear motor so that it drives the roll in the direction of its unrolling at a speed of rotation which is an increasing function of the signal delivered by the said sensor. <IMAGE>
