Prodn. of EP-additives - by sulphurising unsatd. aliphatic or alicyclic cpds. in presence of aromatic di:sulphide(s)

Prodn. of EP-additives, based on S and P, for lubricants comprises sulphurising unsatd. aliphatic cpds. having 6-22C atoms and/or alicyclic unsatd. cpds., such as DCPD, purine or dialkylphosphates, of 4-8C atoms in the presence of aromatic disulphides in an amt. of 10-70% and S-catalysts in amt. of 0.1-20% at 80-150 deg.C. Unsatd. aliphatic plant alcohols contg. 9-22C atoms and/or olefins contg. 6-22C atoms and/or alicyclic unsatd. cpds. such as DCPD, purines and/or 4-8C dialkylphosphates, in ratio 1-2:4-1:2-0.5 are reacted in a single step with S in the presence of aromatic disulphides and a catalyst mixt. comprising mercaptobenzothiazole and aliphatic amines in ratio 2-1:1-4 at 100-150 deg.C for 2-4 hrs. ADVANTAGE - The additives do not contain any chlorine. An EP additive was prepared by mixing 500 (pts.wt.) isopentadecene, 300 aliphatic unsatd. alcohol based on rapeseed oil, 300 dibutylamine, 150 mercaptobenzothiazole, 200 S, 300 dibutylphosphite and 1000 dixylyldisulphide and stirred in N2 for 3 hrs. at 140 deg.C 3 wt.% of the additive was added to a hydrorefined neutral oil of viscosity 60 mm2/g at 50 deg.C and then subjected to a cog bracing test (TGL26890). Result was more than 1334 N/mm compared to the oil without the additive of 400-7 N/mm
