The present invention relates to a recombinant carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)/vaccinia virus or other viral vector which expresses CEA on the surface of infected cells and which elicits an immune response in vivo directed against CEA or cells expressing CEA an d a pharmaceutical composition containing same. The invention also relates to methods of treating patients containing carcinoma cells in which CEA is expressed and methods of stimulating the immune system against CEA.
