PURPOSE: To provide an optical fiber having defects of a high concn. CONSTITUTION: A germanium silicate optical fiber 22 having a GeO/GeO2 ratio substantially higher than that of an ordinarily used equiv. fiber is disclosed. This fiber 22 has low of at least low/m.mol% GeO2 at a wavelength of 330nm. Such fiber 22 is conveniently usable for production of series light refractive Bragg gratings and other light refractive optical constituting parts. The fiber 22 may be produced by an inside surface deposition method (for example, MCVD, PCVD), an outside surface deposition method (for example, VAD, OVD) or a sol/gel method.
