摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To code a color picture in which a binary and a multi-value color signal are in existence in mixture without deterioration by extracting a characteristic part from an original picture, coding a binary color picture generated from the extracted picture part and coding a difference picture from the original picture in a hierarchical way. CONSTITUTION:A multi-value color picture signal 100 of each color read from a picture memory 20 is converted into a binary color signal for each color at a binarizing circuit 21. Moreover, each block of the signal 100 is discriminated by a discrimination section 91 as to whether the block is an edge part or a nonedge part. A signal from the circuit 1 is masked at a selector section 28 for each block by using a mask signal 121. Only an edge picture of a binarized picture is stored in a memory 22. The binarized color signal read from the memory 22 is subject to code processing at a coder A and a code word 105 is outputted. A level of the binary edge picture outputted from the selector section 28 is converted at a conversion section 29 and the result is subject to difference processing from a multi-value color signal 112 at a difference device 23, a color conversion section 27 converts the result into a luminance color difference signal 108, coded via a memory 24 and a code word 106 is outputted.</p>
