The small electrical battery cell (1) has negative and positive electrodes (2, 3) with a separator plate between them. The electrodes are isolated from the housing by an inset (5). The top of the unit is enclosed by a cover (6) and the base (7) is connected to the negative electrode by a spring inset (20). When the cell is subjected to an overload condition the internal gas pressure rises until a point is reached when the spring contact separates from the plate and the current is interrupted. ADVANTAGE - Avoids need for rupture sections or overload valves.
