A bioreaction is effected by gasifying, eg oxygenating, a liquid/solids mixture containing a micro-organism. The mixture is confined in an apparatus comprising a reaction vessel 10 and circulated around a loop, the loop including a column 4 in which gas transfer is effected e.g. by being introduced via line 8. The liquid is introduced into the top of the column at a velocity which is sufficient to generate and maintain, at least in an upper region of the column, a substantially continuous foam extending across of the column, and of relatively uniform bubble size, and also sufficient to prevent gas accumulating at the top of the column. The column may be located inside the vessel 10 or may be in the form of a continuous or segmented annulus around it. Processes mentioned are the liberation of metals from sulphide ores and the disulphurisation of coal. The exemplified process is the liberation of gold from pyrites using Thiobacillus ferro-oxidans.

|
