PURPOSE: To obtain zirconium having a small thermal neutron capture cross-section by carrying out a continuous steady state chromatographic separation of a soln. of zirconium anion whose isotopes distribution of thermal neutron capture cross-section have wider than a desired distribution using an anion exchange resin as a stationary phase of a chromatographic column. CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. of zirconium anion such as ZrOCl4 <-2> is supplied to a continuous annular chromatograph 10 having a fixed phase consisting of an anion exchange resin. And, an aq. soln. of hydrochloric acid or the like is used as a mobile phase. Further, a crude product from hydrolysis of chlorinated zircon sand is used to obtain respective separate product fractions of hafnium, heavy metal impurities, transition metal impurities as well as radical impurities such as thorium and uranium. Thus, two product fractions rich in zirconium isotopes, i.e., zirconium 90 and zirconium 94, are collected. These two fractions are bonded to obtain zirconium having a smaller thermal neutron capture cross- section than the raw material zirconium.
