The continuous strip of paper (2) is coated with a liq. by guiding the paper (2) by a roller (1) over a trough (3) contg. the liq. The trough is formed between two walls (4,6) and is connected to a supply pipe (11). The thickness of the coating is controlled by a flexible lip (12) projecting from the upper edge of the wall (6). The edge of the lip is clamped in the required position by clamping devices (17,19) mounted on a beam (20) which can be swung about an axis parallel to the axis of the roller (1).
