Producing synthetic diamond body - by gas phase precipitating individual diamond layers and soldering layers together in a high frequency heating coil

Synthetic diamond bodies are made by producing individual diamond layer (1) by gas phase precipitation onto a substate surface (2), separating the layer from the surface and soldering (3) the layers together in a high frequency heating coil (4). The solder layers (3) contain carbide forming additives. The individual layer are produced with openings so that when soldered together the body has the required openings. After producing each diamond layer, one side is coated with solder and assembled in a stack of similarly coated diamond layer. The side of the diamond layer away from the substrate (2) face is polished before being solder coated and the assembly is heated by a coil (4) under a protective atmosphere such as argon or a vacuum. ADVANTAGE - A substantially isotropic synthetic body is produced with good isotropic mechanical properties. Large volume bodies can be produced.
