The switch has a housing (11) with a flanged bottom section (16) that bolts (17) onto a base (14) that is shaped to mount on a rail (15). Within the bottom section of the housing is an arcing chamber (19) with single are extinguishing plates (20). A channel (22,23) is provided for the passage of the extinguishing gas. The electrical switch has a contact region (24) formed between two contact elements (25,26) that are pivot mounted about two axes (29,30). An electromagnetic actuator is energised to cause opening of the contacts.
