The appts. is for supporting a physically or mentally handicapped child in an upright position. It consists of a base frame (1) which supports a telescopic column (2) of adjustable height. The column consists of a fixed lower part (18), which encloses a spring (19) which supports the movable upper part (20), which can be held in the required position by a clamp (6). A saddle-like seat (4) is supported on a toothed wheel (15) which is mounted on the upper end of the upper part (20) of the column (2). The toothed wheel enables the angular position of the seat (4) to be adjusted and then to be locked in the required position.
