The cylinder bore (29) in a block (3) houses a plunger (13) which delivers fluid under pressure through an outlet aperture (17) to an outlet chamber (23). A discharge valve has a strip like valve element (21,33) which covers the outlet aperture (17) and surrounding area and which is lifted by the delivery pressure. The surface surrounding the outlet aperture (17) and supporting the valve element (21,33) has slots at some distance from the outer edge of the outlet aperture (17) which connect with the outlet chamber (23). The external contour of the outlet aperture (17) will pref. be round or oval and surrounded - in top view - by an annular groove (57) or an oval or rectangular ring groove (65), the longer axis of which runs in the same direction as the strip shaped valve element (21,33).
