The discharge tube (1) of cylindrical or other cross-section contains the laser medium which is a mixture of carbon dioxide, filling material and helium.The discharge tube is surrounded along part of its length by a coolant tube (2) through which a coolant (3) flows. This forms a sealed coolant space. Electrodes (6, 7, 6a, 7a) are provided for connection to a current source (9). In order to prevent the electrodes (6, 7, 6a, 7a) from burning during operation, polluting the laser medium and the laser opticla components, the current source (9) is an a.c. source. The electrodes lie outside the coolant tube. This results in the energy being coupled into the discharge medium via the electrodes. ADVANTAGE - Prevents electrodes burning and guarantees inexpensive and efficient stimulation of laser medium.
