Wheelchairs are usually fitted with brakes which act directly on the tyres of the main wheels. The effectiveness of such a brake depends upon the tyre pressure and in the event of a puncture the brake becomes ineffective. To overcome this problem it is proposed to fit a brake disc (1) to each main wheel. The disc has a flange on the rim and a brake-shoe (5) is pressed against this flange by a lever (3) and a connecting rod (4). This type of brake is easily fitted to any standard type of wheel chair. USE/ADVANTAGE - Inexpensive brake for a wheelchair. The effectiveness of the brake is independent of the tyre pressure. It may act as an external contracting band brake.
