Sheets of paper, which are to be fed into a printing machine, are first correctly aligned in the following way. The sheets (1) are placed in a row on the table (2). The front edge of the first sheet (1) is aligned against a first stop (3) which can be moved horizontally in a slot in the table (2). A transport device fitted with suction heads (5) lifts the sheet over the first stop and placed it against a second movable stop (6) and whilst in this position the side edges of the sheet are correctly aligned. At the same time, a second sheet (8) is aligned with the first stop. The second stop is then retracted and the first sheet is guided into the printing machine.
